Caterina de 'Medici (born May 2, 1593 in Florence , † April 17, 1629 in Siena ) belonged to the younger line of the Medici family and was Duchess of Mantua and Montferrat by marriage from February 16, 1617 to October 29, 1626 .

Life

Caterina was the second daughter and the third child of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand I and his wife Christine of Lorraine . It was named after the Queen of France of the same name . On February 16, 1617 she married Ferdinando Gonzaga , who had been Duke of Mantua since 1612. For him it was his second marriage, which, like the first, remained childless. In 1626 he died at the age of 39 and Caterina became a widow. She returned to Tuscany and in 1627 took over the office of governor of Siena. There she died of smallpox two years later. Caterina was buried in the traditional burial place of the Medici in the Basilica di San Lorenzo .
