Aemilia von Sachsen (born July 27, 1516 in Freiberg , † April 9, 1591 in Ansbach ) was the third wife of the Ansbach Margrave Georg the Pious .

Life

Aemilia was a daughter of the Saxon Duke Heinrich and his wife Katharina von Mecklenburg ; she thus belongs to the Wettin family (see also the family list of the House of Wettin ).

On August 25, 1533, she married the significantly older Margrave Georg, who had been recognized as a Silesian Duke and who also administered Brandenburg-Kulmbach for the son of his late brother Kasimir . For Georg it was the third marriage that produced the hoped-for heir Georg Friedrich .

After the death of her husband, she was the guardian of her underage son Georg Friedrich from 1543–1556, for whose well-founded and humanistic upbringing she provided. The regency in Brandenburg-Ansbach , however, was jointly led by the Elector of Saxony Johann Friedrich I , the Margrave of Brandenburg-Kulmbach Albrecht Alcibiades and Philip the Magnanimous , the Landgrave of Hesse. Aemilia, who acted as a strict Lutheran against Catholicism in the country, was described as clever, virtuous, and godly. Later she retired to her widow's seat .

progeny

Her children with Georg were:

⚭ 1560 Duke Heinrich XI. of Liegnitz (1539–1588)
⚭ 1556 Heinrich V. von Plauen , Burgrave of Meißen
⚭ 1. 1558 Princess Elisabeth of Brandenburg-Küstrin (1540–1578)
