Dorothea of Brandenburg (1420-1491)
Dorothea von Brandenburg (born February 9, 1420 in Berlin ; † January 19, 1491 in the Rehna Monastery ) was a princess of Brandenburg and by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg .
Life
Dorothea was a daughter of Elector Friedrich I of Brandenburg (1371–1440) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1383–1442), daughter of Duke Friedrich of Bavaria-Landshut . Dorothea's brothers were the successive ruling Friedrich II and Albrecht Achilles , Elector of Brandenburg.
She married Duke Heinrich IV of Mecklenburg (1417–1477) in May 1432 . Dorothea Dömitz and Gorlosen received as dowry , which her sister Margarete had already received when she married Albrecht V von Mecklenburg in 1423, but who died shortly after the marriage. In the dispute between Brandenburg and Mecklenburg over the inheritance of the principality of Wenden , the family ties between Duke Heinrich and Elector Friedrich contributed to a comparison.
After Dorothea became a widow in 1477, she lived as a nun in Rehna Monastery from 1485 . She was buried in the town church of St. Jakob and St. Dionysius in Gadebusch. Her grave stone is provided with a scratched drawing of the Duchess, who shows her in nun's costume crowned with a canopy.
