Margaret of Brandenburg (1410–1465)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margarete von Brandenburg (* 1410 ; † July 27, 1465 in Landshut ) was a princess of Brandenburg and successively by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg and Duchess of Bavaria-Ingolstadt .

Margarete was a daughter of the future Elector Friedrich I of Brandenburg (1371-1440) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1383-1442), daughter of Duke Friedrich of Bavaria-Landshut . Margarete's brothers were the successively ruling Friedrich II and Albrecht Achilles , Elector of Brandenburg.

In 1413 she was betrothed to the Pomeranian Prince Wartislaw , the eldest son of Duke Wartislaw VIII . But her fiancé died in 1414/1415.

In 1423 she married Duke Albrecht V of Mecklenburg , who, however, died shortly after the marriage without the couple having lived together. Margarete Dömitz and Gorlosen received a dowry from her father.

On July 20, 1441, Margarete married Duke Ludwig VIII of Bavaria-Ingolstadt (1403–1445), also known as Ludwig the Höckerige, in order to secure the peace . Through this marriage, Ludwig came back into possession of the areas that he had lost to Elector Friedrich I of Brandenburg in the Bavarian War 1420–1422. With Ludwig, Margarete had her only two children, albeit who died early.

Finally, in 1446, Margarete secretly married her court master Martin von Waldenfels († 1471). This relationship found its way into the tragedy Ludwig der Gebartete by Georg Köberle , published in 1844 .
