Theodor Straub (born March 12, 1930 in Ingolstadt ) is a German historian . He researches and publishes in particular on the history of Ingolstadt, where he deals intensively with the local Judaism , the Illuminati order and the Frankenstein myth .

Life

Straub studied German, history, English, art history and philosophy in Regensburg and Munich . He partially financed his studies through a position as a research assistant in the Ingolstadt city archive. His admission work for the teaching qualification examination in 1955 then dealt with an Ingolstadt topic: "Studies on the history and characteristics of Duke Ludwig the Bearded of Bavaria-Ingolstadt ". In 1957 he passed the second state examination for teaching at grammar schools. From 1957 to 1959 he conducted research with a grant from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Paris for his dissertation on "Duke Ludwig the Bearded of Bavaria-Ingolstadt and his relations with France from 1391 to 1415". In 1962 he received his doctorate from Max Spindler . A first position as a teacher in Augsburg from 1959 to 1962 was followed by 1967 as a teacher at the International German School in Paris and as a high school professor in Augsburg. In 1971 he returned to his hometown and taught there at the Christoph-Scheiner-Gymnasium .

For the Handbook of Bavarian History published by Spindler, Straub wrote the chapter on the divisions of Bavaria from the middle of the 14th to the middle of the 15th century and was able to correctly date the origin of the Golden Horse Inn for the first time. In the work on Ingolstadt history published by Wilhelm Reissmüller and Theodor Müller in 1974, he contributed to the Ingolstadt ducal era. Straub was involved in several major exhibitions in the Ingolstadt City Archives, for example in 1971 about Ludwig the Bearded and France, 1980 about the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt , 1985 about Isabeau de Bavière and 1992 about the Duchies of Bavaria-Ingolstadt and Bavaria-Landshut .

The subject of Straub's research was also the Reformation and Counter-Reformation in Ingolstadt, the Catholic Enlightenment around Benedikt Stattler and Johann Michael Sailer and, above all, the Jewish minority in Ingolstadt, whose history he researched intensively and made it accessible in the exhibition Ingolstadt Faces and the accompanying catalog in 2000 . His preoccupation with Frankenstein and the Illuminati is considered to be groundbreaking .

In 1992 Straub retired as director of studies , but at the same time intensified his lecturing activities at the adult education center and other organizations.

In 1999 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon, especially for his not always comfortable research on city history during the Nazi era . In 2006 the city of Ingolstadt honored Straub with its culture prize for his work, his research on the city's history and his social commitment.

Straub is a committed Protestant, married, has three grown children and lives in Gaimersheim .
