Catherine of Saxony-Lauenburg
Katharina von Sachsen-Lauenburg (* around 1400 ; † September 22, 1450 ) was mistress of Werle [-Güstrow] and duchess of Mecklenburg , regent from 1422 to 1436.
Katharina was the daughter of Erich IV and Sophia von Braunschweig-Lüneburg . She first married Johann VII von Werle . He died in 1414. As a result, widowed, she married the Mecklenburg Duke Johann IV. When he died in 1422 after six years of marriage, she took over the regency in the Duchy of Mecklenburg for her underage sons until 1436. The knight Matthias von Axekow supported them as general and councilor .
For a long time, a document from July 23, 1448 was considered Katharina's last mention. Another names November as the month of her death. Hans Witte was finally able to prove that Mauritientag (September 22nd) 1450 was the day she died at the turn of the century.
