Theodor Höpingk

Theodor Höpingk (* 1591 in Soest ; † 1641 probably in Friedberg (Hesse) ) is considered to be the first author who attempted the objective definition of the term " coat of arms " without the influence of foreign sources . His versatility was evident in his work as a historian , lawyer and heraldist . He was a professor of history in Marburg and a doctorate in law.

Before Höpingk worked as a lawyer in Friedberg , he had lived in Frankfurt am Main from 1635 .

  • De Insignium Sive Armorum Prisco Et Novo Jure Tractatus Juridico-Historico-Philologicus. Nuremberg 1642 (the work on the coat of arms was already completed in 1639).
