Bloodbath in the walk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The blood bath in Gehn (sometimes referred to in sources as blood bath am Gehn ) on March 29, 1591 was the bloody climax of the Grothaus feud of the knight Cord von Grothaus against the city, citizen and bishop of Osnabrück and the Count of Tecklenburg, which began in 1549 .

Background and process

This feud connected with the Spanish-Dutch war and led to a large number of looting in the Osnabrück region. The sons of Grothaus, who held leading positions in the Spanish troops, took part again and again.

On March 29, 1591, about 800 poorly equipped farmers from several villages (including farmers from Merzen under the leadership of Vogtes Hoberg) gathered to fight the Spanish troops. In the subsequent battle in Gehn , a foothill of the Wiehengebirge , 300 farmers were killed on a heath by the Spanish cavalry unit Blue Flag , which was stationed in the Lingen domain . A memorial stone commemorates this event near the village of Balkum, which belongs to Bramsche . On the side of the Spaniards, only one rider was killed and two horses were wounded. Individual raids continued until 1594.
