Dirck Hals (baptized March 19, 1591 in Haarlem ; † May 17, 1656 there ) was a Dutch painter of realism .

Life

Dirck Hals was the younger brother of Frans Hals and the third son of the draper Franchoys Fransz Hals from Mechelen , and his wife Adriaentgen van Geertenryck from Antwerp , who was named Adriana Hals in the baptism entry. Dirck had two older brothers who were both born in Antwerp: Frans Hals (1580 / 85–1666), in whose artistic shadow Dirck was to stand throughout his life, and Joost Hals (1584–1626), who was also a painter . The Hals family emigrated to the northern Netherlands after Antwerp fell to the Duke of Parma in August 1585. The mention of Dirck's baptism in the Reformed Church in Haarlem on March 19, 1591 is the first evidence of their resettlement. He received his first lessons from his brother Frans Hals, who was eleven years older than him and who was accepted into the St. Lukas painters' guild in 1610 . Also the two artists Esaias van de Velde and Willem Pietersz. Buytewech , in whose workshop he worked, exerted a particular influence on him.

Dirck Hals spent most of his life in his native Haarlem. From 1618 to 1624 Hals served in the 2nd company of the third corporal body of the St. Georgs Rifle Guild, to which his brother Frans had been a member since 1615. From 1618 to 1626 he was a member of "De Wijngaertranken", the rhetoric association to which his brother Frans also belonged.

It was not until 1627 that he was accepted as a member of the Guild of Luke. In 1620 or 1621 he married Agneta (Agniesje) Jansdr and between 1621 and 1635 seven of their children were born. The only son, Antonie Hals (1621-1691), started his own business as a portraitist and painter of genre scenes in Amsterdam, where he was first mentioned on June 21, 1652.

Dirck Hals lived in Leiden from 1641 to 1643 and 1648 . Before moving to Leiden, where he rented a house on February 22, 1641, Dirck met the Amsterdam painter and art dealer Pieter Jansz van den Bosch (1613–1663). Dirck Hals died in Haarlem and was buried in the Begijnhofkerk on May 17, 1656. Dirck Hals was already a well-respected painter during his lifetime.
