Life

Willem Buytewech was a son of the shoe and candle maker Pieter Jacobsz. He spent his apprenticeship in Haarlem . He was first registered as a member of the St. Luke Guild in 1612. Shortly before - around 1610 - Frans Hals had also become a member of the guild. Obviously, he had a strong influence on Buytewech with his work. Numerous drawn copies based on works by Frans Hals clearly demonstrate this. After his marriage to Aeltje van Amerongen on November 10, 1613, Willem Buytewech returned to Rotterdam in 1617. The connections to Haarlem remained.

Buytewech worked primarily as a graphic designer. His subjects mainly included genre and landscape pictures, but also biblical scenes and allegorical representations. His well-known and dated works were created between 1606 and 1621. Today, only eight paintings from his oeuvre remain - all of them genre paintings. His cheerful company on a garden terrace (1616/17) is particularly well known .
