Esaias van de Velde
Esaias van de Velde (* around 1590 in Amsterdam , † 1630 in The Hague ) was a Dutch painter , draftsman and etcher .
Life
He was the son of the Antwerp painter Hans van de Velde and a student of G. van Coninxloo and David Vinckboons . From 1612 van de Velde was a member of the Guild of St. Luke . Although he was only active in Haarlem from 1610 to 1618 , he is considered a representative of the Haarlem School of Painting, who set new accents in the landscape with his atmospheric execution . In addition to landscapes with staffage, he painted depictions of cities , genre scenes and battle pictures .
Probably inspired by the copper engravings by Antonio Tempesta after Otto van Veen - the same source from which the Italian battle painters drew - Esaias van de Velde began his first experiments and soon became the founder of a whole school of battle painters. Typical of his depictions of fighting infantry are the pikemen's lances pointing towards one another in a fan-shaped manner , which can also be found in the battle depictions of Aniello Falcone . The lowering of the horizon and the division of the picture into different picture levels gave these pictures a typical northern Dutch character.
His late work becomes richer in composition and more colorful. He also painted table parties with moralizing overtones and equestrian fights, which served as a model for many later horse painters.
Among his students were Jan van Goyen , Pieter de Neyn and Jan Asselijn .
His son Esaias, also called Esaias II, is also mentioned as a painter in Amsterdam in 1671.
