Joost Hals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joost Hals (* 1584 or 1585 in Antwerp ; † before October 16, 1626 in Haarlem , date unknown) was a Dutch painter and brother of Dirck and Frans Hals .

Life

Joost Hals was the second son of the cloth weaver Franchois Hals and his wife Adriana van Gestenryck after Frans Hals , who was born in 1583 or 1584. He was born in 1584 or 1585, an exact date of birth is unknown, as with his brother. The Hals family emigrated to the northern Netherlands after Antwerp fell to the Duke of Parma in August 1585. The mention of Dirck Hals' baptism in the Reformed Church in Haarlem on March 19, 1591 is the first evidence of their relocation to this city, where the family stayed.

Like his two brothers, Joost Hals became a genre and portrait painter , but nothing is known about his works. He died before October 16, 1626 , as it is documented for that day that Frans and Dirck Hals, as his heirs, repealed a seizure of the estate of Karel van Mander the Younger. Joost Hals initiated this in 1623 for an unknown reason.
