Cornelis Hendricksz [oon] Vroom (* around 1591/1592 probably in Haarlem ; † 1661 there ) was a Dutch painter and draftsman.

family

Cornelis Vroom was born as the son of the marine painter Hendrick Cornelisz. Vroom was born into a family of artists. Date and place of birth are not known. The artist himself stated in 1649 that he was 58 years old. His grandfather, who was also called Cornelis Hendrickszoon Vroom, was a sculptor and his brother was the city architect of Gdansk. To distinguish the sculptor is also called Cornelis Hendrickszoon Vroom the elder and the painter is called Cornelis Hendrickszoon Vroom the younger. The family tradition was followed by the two brothers and the son of Cornelis Vroom, they also worked as painters.

Training and work

Cornelis Vroom initially worked as a student and employee of his father. His first signed picture Sea battle between a Spanish galleon and Turkish galleys from 1615 is the only known naval picture . The authorship of another naval painting The Battle of Lepanto ( Ham House , Richmond) is unclear. Despite the small number of maritime works, he must have made a name for himself as an artist in this profession. In the estate of the painter Pieter Lastman , seascapes are mentioned that were "made in the style of young Vroom". From 1620 Cornelis Vroom turned to landscape painting. The reason for the change of subject may have been family tensions, which the housekeeper reported to the family. From 1635 to 1642 Vroom is recorded as a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem. He related in part to the proceeds of sale of a product sold to the city of Haarlem in 1639 paintings to recover from service in the vigilante ransom.

His drawings and early landscape paintings are clearly under the influence of Jan and Esaias van de Velde and Willem Pietersz. Buytewech . The painting River Landscape with Boats from 1622 (Paynhurst Collection, London) is the artist's oldest known landscape painting and already anticipates the style of landscapes by Salomon van Ruisdael . Forest scenes and dunes are often depicted in Cornelis Vroom's paintings. There is usually a horizontal separation of sky and landscape, with repoussoir motifs increasing the depth effect. The contact with Jacob van Ruisdael influenced both artists reciprocally, whereby Vroom's drawings in particular played an important role in Ruisdael's development. Vroom also collaborated with other painters. He created landscapes in paintings by Paul Bril , Jacob van Campen and Caesar van Everdingen . Vroom worked for the English court in 1628 and completed paintings for the hall and staircase of Huis Honselaarsdijk (today's Westland municipality ) in 1638 . Vroom, who was also in correspondence with Constantijn Huygens , found his final resting place on September 16, 1661 in the Church of St. Bavo in Haarlem.
