- 1552 : Elector Moritz von Sachsen concludes the Treaty of Chambord with Henry II of France .
- 1552: Russian troops occupy Kazan , the capital of the Volga Tatars .
- 1553 : After the death of King Edward VI. the Protestant Lady Jane Gray is proclaimed queen for a few days. After her removal, the Catholic Maria I ascends the throne. During the re-Catholicization that she carried out , around 300 Protestants were burned at the stake.
- 1555 : Peace of Augsburg and religion - end of the religious wars of the Reformation
- 1556 : Philip II establishes the line of the Spanish Habsburgs.
- 1557 : The French suffer a heavy defeat against the Spanish at the Battle of Saint-Quentin .
- 1558 : With Calais, the French conquer the last English mainland possession in France.

- 1559: Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis between France, England, Spain and Savoy . France leaves Spain to dominate Italy in exchange for Calais. The Duke of Savoy got a large part of his land back.
- 1559: Pope Paul IV introduces the Index Librorum Prohibitorum , a directory of forbidden books.
