Joaquín Navarro-Valls (born November 16, 1936 in Cartagena , Spain , † July 5, 2017 in Rome , Italy ) was a Spanish journalist and doctor . He was director of the Holy See Press Office from 1984 to 2006 .

Life

After attending the German School in Cartagena, Navarro-Valls studied medicine at the University of Granada and the University of Barcelona , as well as journalism at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. In 1961 he received his degree in internal medicine and surgery , and received his doctorate in the field of psychiatry (title of the dissertation: Trastornos psiquiátricos en los traumas craneales , German: "Psychiatric disorders in cranial trauma "). He was an assistant at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona and later head of the Medical Pathology Department in the Polyclinic. In 1968 he completed his studies in journalism and in 1980 that of communication sciences .

Navarro-Valls had been a member of Opus Dei since he was 20 and headed the Barcelona office in the 1960s. In the early 1970s he moved to Rome and worked with the founder of Opus Dei, Josemaría Escrivá , on the communication tasks of Opus Dei, and later with Álvaro del Portillo . From 1974 to 1977 he was the spokesman for this organization and was involved in various apostolic, social and educational initiatives in Catalonia and Aragon. He also worked as a correspondent for the daily ABC , particularly in the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. In 1983 he was elected President of the Associazione stampa estera , the association of foreign correspondents in Rome. Navarro-Valls was celibate.

Pope John Paul II appointed Navarro-Valls director of the Vatican press office in 1984 . He also accompanied John Paul II on most of the more than 100 trips abroad. After the Pope's death, Navarro-Valls initially continued to head the press office. After he met Pope Benedict XVI. asked to be released from his duties in June 2006, he resigned on July 11. His successor was the previous General Director of Vatican Radio , Father Federico Lombardi SJ . Navarro-Valls then worked as a columnist for the daily La Repubblica and for several Italian and international television stations. Since January 2007 he has been chairman of the advisory board of the private university Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, which is affiliated with Opus Dei.

In the 2005 film Pope John Paul II , he is played by Giuliano Gemma .

He died of complications from pancreatic cancer .
