Adolf Holm (born August 8, 1830 in Lübeck , † June 9, 1900 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German ancient historian .

Life

Adolf Holm was the son of a Lübeck tobacco manufacturer and retailer and grew up in the house on the sunny side between Braunstraße and Holstenstraße on the Trave . He studied in Leipzig and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1851. He was then a high school teacher at the Katharineum in Lübeck . He dealt with the history and geography of ancient Sicily as well as Greece and wrote a multi-volume work on the history of Sicily in antiquity. In Lübeck he gave numerous lectures as a member of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities and the Association for Lübeck History and Archeology. The former collection of plaster casts of ancient sculptures in the Museum am Dom was largely on his initiative. He was one of the founders of the Society of Friends of Art and its chairman until he was called to Sicily. He was also editor of the Neue Lübeckischen Blätter .

On the basis of his publications, he was appointed to an extraordinary position for universal history at the University of Palermo in 1876 ​​at the instigation of the Sicilian historical researcher Michele Amari . In 1884 he was appointed to the University of Naples , where he taught until 1897. He spent his old age in Freiburg.
