Enzo Degani , Latin Hentzius Degani (born September 30, 1934 in Terrazzo , Province of Verona , † April 23, 2000 in Bologna ) was an Italian Graecist .

Life

Degani, son of the gamekeeper Garibaldi Degani and the primary school teacher Angelina Pasquale, graduated from the Liceo A. Pigafetta in Vicenza . After attending a lecture by the Graecist Carlo Diano at the University of Padua , he decided against studying applied chemistry for classical philology . On November 7, 1958, he defended his tesi di laurea on the term Aion from Homer to Aristotle , a conceptual history based on extensive text analyzes, in Padua with Carlo Diano. The work was published in print in 1961. After a year as assistant volunteer with Diano (1958–1959), he followed the Graecist Benedetto Marzullo as an assistant in Greek literature at the University of Cagliari (1959 / 1960–1968 / 1969). In 1965 he acquired the libera docenza with the support of Mario Untersteiner and represented the chairs for Byzantine Philology (1965 / 1966–1969 / 1970) and for Greek literature (1967 / 1968–1968 / 1969) in Cagliari .

On November 1, 1969 he was appointed professor straordinario at the University of Bologna (also his teacher Marzullo, from whom he was supposed to move away in 1977/1978 for reasons of philological methodology, moved to the University of Bologna) and was from November 1, 1972 to 2000 he ended up as full professor of Greek literature. In addition, he represented in teaching the history of the Greek language (1970 / 1971-1971 / 1972), the history of classical philology (1973 / 1974-1976 / 1977 and 1987/1988), the Byzantine philology (1977/1978) and the Greek philology (1990 / 1991-1991 / 1992). He also held a course in medieval Greek at the Scuola per Archivisti in Ravenna (1990/1991–1991/1992) and a course in Greek literature as part of the Corso di Laurea in Conservazione dei Beni Culturali (1992/1993).

He was also invited by Giuseppe Giangrande Visiting Professor at Birkbeck College of the University of London (1977) and he held guest lectures and seminars in Liverpool (1977), Freiburg (1978), Warsaw (1980), Coimbra (1981), Athens , Thessaloniki , Ioannina (1983), Barcelona , Madrid (several times), Konstanz , Cologne and Hamburg (1988), Valladolid (1992), Toulouse (1994), Geneva (1996), Salamanca , Valencia , Murcia and Lisbon as well as in Buenos Aires , La Plata , Mendoza and Santiago de Chile (September 1998). In the German-speaking countries Degani also appeared in a longer contribution to the Introduction to Greek Philology (1997) edited by Heinz-Günther Nesselrath . For New Pauly he has taken on a large number of contributions to Greek epigrammatics .

In 1998 Degani was awarded the Praemium Classicum Clavarense .

In April 2000 he died of a serious illness.

Degani was temporarily married to the classical philologist Maria Grazia Bonanno .

Research priorities

Degani's research focus was on iambos and elegy of the archaic (on the iambograph Hipponax , the inventor of the Hinkiambus , he presented the relevant edition of fragments and testimony as well as an accompanying volume with interpretations), on the Greek tragedy and comedy , the parodic and gastronomic poetry, the Epigram, the lexicography and especially Hesychios of Alexandria (his interest in this field goes back to the early years with Marzullo) and the history of classical philology, especially the biographical-methodical profiles of Italian scholars (in his last essay Filologia e storia he recommends a Connection of the different philological methods of Gottfried Hermann and August Boeckh ). Degani has also dedicated some works to Byzantine literature ( Nikephoros Basilakes , Niketas Choniates ) and epigrammatics.

After a less than happy experience with the management of the Giornale Filologico Ferrarese (11, 1988-12, 1989), which Antonio Antonioni had proposed to him, Degani founded in 1990 together with Francesco Bossi, Gabriele Burzacchini, Ornella Montanari (his assistant), Vinicio Tammaro and Renzo Tosi has his own magazine under the title Eikasmós Quaderni Bolognesi di Filologia Classica , which has established itself despite his early death and is also available online. The Greek verbal noun εἰκασμός eikasmós , derived from the verb εἰκάζω eikázo "I suspect", was deliberately chosen to characterize the methodical-critical layout of the magazine in the Deganis sense. At the same time, the journal should also take account of the history of classical philology. The inclusion of the Festschrift for Ernst Vogt , which is dedicated to the memory of various classical philologists, is also to be understood as a contribution .
