Giuseppe Giangrande ( 1926 - June 12, 2013 ) was an Italian classical scholar .

Life

Giangrande grew up in Pisa , where he studied classical philology . He then went on to do a doctorate at King's College , Cambridge , and stayed there as a fellow (1955–1966). 1966 Giangrande Professor of Classics at Birkbeck College of the University of London . In 1987 he moved to King's College London in the same position , where he taught until his retirement in 1992.

Giangrande was extremely gifted with languages. In addition to the two ancient languages, Giangrande spoke and wrote fluently or ready for printing not only in Italian and English, but also in Spanish, German and French.

Giangrande and the Byzantinist and Professor of Classics and Ancient History at Birkbeck College Robert Browning gave the Classical and Byzantine monographs (AM Hakkert, Amsterdam 1973ff.) And the Museum Philologum Londiniense (AM Hakkert, Amsterdam 1975–1987; Vol. 2 contains a special Papyrological Number ), later also with his assistant Heather White , and then initially alone, later again with Heather White, the Corolla Londiniensis (JC Gieben, Amsterdam 1981–1990), of which several volumes are also in the London series published by Giangrande Studies in Classical Philology ( EJ Brill , Leiden 1981–1990) published.

Giangrande saw his chair as a Classics Research Center . Numerous postgraduate students mainly from Great Britain, Italy and Greece came as visiting students or to do their qualification theses. The publication organs founded by Giangrande served both these postgraduates and scholars from all over Europe who were networked with Giangrande.

Giangrande's ashes are buried in the family chapel in Roccasecca , Lazio .

Giangrande was married and had two children. He lived with his family in Little Hadham , Hertfordshire .

Research priorities

In his early years Giangrande first worked on the Neo-Platonist Eunapios of Sardis , of whose sophist biographies he presented a critical edition. Later he devoted himself in particular to Hellenistic and Roman literature and their arte allusiva , without losing sight of the other areas of Greek literature. Giangrandes way of working can best be characterized with the terms of microphilology and conjectural criticism. The exact observation of the historical use of language by an author (Giangrande often quotes the term in German) provides the criterion for the constitution of the text.
