The Istituto Siciliano di Studi Bizantini e Neoellenici "Bruno Lavagnini" (German: Institute for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies "Bruno Lavagnini" ) is an institute founded by Bruno Lavagnini in 1960 in Palermo , but independent of the University of Palermo in the fields of Byzantine studies and the Neo-Greek Studies .

The main task was on the one hand the development of sources on Byzantine southern Italy, on the other hand the creation of a modern Greek-Italian dictionary, which was published in 1993 as Dizionario greco moderno-italiano . The plan to found the institute was supported by a vote of the 8th International Byzantine Congress in Palermo in 1951. The first publications appeared in 1954, the final legal recognition took place in 1960 through a law of the region of Sicily , which at the same time provided for basic funding. The institute, which is also financially supported by the Greek government , acts as the consulate of the Hellenic Republic in Sicily. For the institute Lavagnini was able to acquire the library from Silvio Giuseppe Mercati , brother of Giovanni Mercati , which contains numerous rare prints.
