Giovanni Cardinal Mercati (born December 17, 1866 in Villa Gaida , Italy , † August 23, 1957 in Rome ) was an Italian scholar and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying philosophy and theology in Milan and Rome, Giovanni Mercati received the sacrament of ordination on September 21, 1889 . After further studies he taught at the seminary of Reggio nell'Emilia from 1892 and worked from 1893 in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan. From 1898 to 1919 he was a member of the staff of the Biblioteca Vaticana , and on October 23, 1919, he took over its leadership as Prefect . In 1901 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . The Prussian Academy of Sciences appointed him a corresponding member in 1925. The Accademia dei Lincei he belonged since 1950 as a foreign member.

On June 15, 1936, Pope Pius XI appointed him . to the Apostolic Protonotary and accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry San Giorgio in Velabro in the cardinals college . He bestowed Giovanni Mercati the title of Librarian and Archivist of the Holy Roman Church. Cardinal Mercati took part in the conclave of 1939 , from which Pius XII. emerged as Pope.

Giovanni Mercati died in Rome on August 23, 1957 and was buried in the Church of San Giorgio in Velabro .

His brother Angelo Mercati (1870–1955) was Prefect of the Vatican Archives from 1925 to 1955, his brother Silvio Giuseppe Mercati (1867–1963) Professor of Byzantine Studies at the University of Rome.
