Rotolo studied Greek and Neo- Greek studies with Bruno Lavagnini at the University of Palermo and acquired the laurea in 1954 . Sent by Bruno Lavagnini, who at that time was in charge of rebuilding the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Atene , he then studied for a year in Thessaloniki , especially with Ioannis Kakridis , Linos Politis and Emmanuel Kriaras , before going to Athens and from 1958 to 1964 he was lecturer for Italian language and literature at the university . During this time, Rotolo met most of the great Greek writers such as Papatsonis, Seferis , Elytis , Ritsos , Vrettakos , Myrivilis , Venezis, Terzakis . After returning from Greece, Rotolo first taught at the Liceo Vittorio Emmanuele II in Palermo before going to university as a lecturer in neo- Greek studies. He developed a close friendship with Nikiforos Vrettakos, whom he had already met in Greece, when the Greek writer stayed in Palermo at the invitation of Bruno Lavagnini during the Greek military dictatorship and worked there on the development of a modern Greek-Italian dictionary, which Rotolo later himself should issue.

Rotolo has been a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens since 1991 and the current President of the Istituto Siciliano di Studi Bizantini e Neoellenici, which is independent from the University of Palermo . He is the founder of the journal Pagine di letteratura neogreca and is on the editorial board of the Modern Greek Studies Yearbook .

Research priorities

In the fields of Greek and Byzantine studies , Rotolo worked on ancient pantomime and translated The Conquest of Thessaloniki by Eustathios of Thessalonica . In the field of Neo-Greek Studies, modern Greek poetry, Adamantios Korais and the Greek language question and the Greek dialects (the forms of Griko ) in Apulia and Calabria have been the subject of various relevant publications. The contemporary authors Rotolo has made known in Italy and beyond through his translations include, apart from Nikiforos Vrettakos, Odysseas Elytis , Giannis Ritsos , Kostula Mitropoulou and Kostas Sterjopoulos . But the poem Hellas by the librarian, philologist and theologian Leone Allacci from the 17th century also caught his attention.
