Mario Vitti

Mario Vitti ( Greek Μάριο Βίττι ; * 1926 in Constantinople ) is an Italian neo- Greekist and professor emeritus of neo- Greek studies at the Università della Tuscia in Viterbo , Italy .

On her mother's side, Vitti is of Greek origin, grew up in the Greek community of Constantinople and writes equally eloquently Greek and Italian. Shortly after the Second World War, the family moved from Constantinople to Italy . Vitti initially taught at the University of Palermo and L'Orientale at the University of Naples , as well as a visiting professor in Paris , Geneva and Thessaloniki , most recently at the Tuscan University in Viterbo. He lives in Rome and is President of the Associazione Nazionale di Studi Neogreci .

Vitti is one of the leading Italian experts in the entire field of modern Greek literature. Among other things, he discovered the manuscript of Ευγένα Evjena (Venice 1646), a religious drama by the not well-known Theodoros Montzeleze (also: Montseleze; Greek Θεόδωρος Μοντσελέζε) from the island of Zakynthos , which expanded knowledge of theater production in the vernacular Greek. In particular, he dealt with Andreas Kalvos , Ugo Foscolo's collaborator , thoroughly examined the generation of the 1930s and analyzed the poetic work of Odysseas Elytis and translated it into Italian. The Italian literary critic and historian Mario Petrucciani was also the subject of one of his studies .

Vitti frequented numerous literary circles and knew many of the great poets, including Elytis and Seferis , personally. The Princeton University Library holds letters to Vitti from Greek, Turkish, Italian and other poets and authors from 1947 to 1992, as well as manuscripts from Greek authors collected by Vitti.

Vitti holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Paris , Thessaloniki and Cyprus and the recipient of the Dido Sotiriou Prize awarded by the Greek Writers' Association .
