John E. Rexine

John Efstratios Rexine (born June 6, 1929 in Boston , † October 23, 1993 in Hamilton , New York ) was an American classical philologist , Byzantinist and Neo-Greekist .

Life

John Efstratios Rexine studied at Harvard College . In 1951 he obtained his bachelor's degree with the title magna cum laude and joined the Phi Beta Kappa fraternity . From 1951 to 1952 he traveled to Greece on a Fulbright Scholarship . 1953 followed the master's degree at Harvard College. From 1955 to 1957, Rexine taught as an instructor in Humanities at Brandeis University . In 1957 he moved to Colgate University as an instructor in Classics , where he spent his entire career. In 1964 he was at Harvard University to Ph. D. doctorate . He was later appointed Charles A. Dana Professor of Classics and served as Dean of the Division of Humanities. In 1979/80 he went to Greece again as a Fulbright scholar. In July 1992 he retired .

Rexine has received several awards for his research work. He received honorary degrees from the Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies in Etna, California (Licentiate in Orthodox Theological Studies 1981) and from the Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts (Doctor of Letters 1986). In 1992 the Classical Association of the Atlantic States presented him with the Award of Merit.

Rexine's main research interests were Greek philosophy and religious history , which he traced from antiquity to the post-Byzantine period. He wrote numerous essays and monographs, including an extensive biography of his contemporary Constantine Cavarnos (1918–2011), an important Orthodox theologian, philosopher and writer. In addition, Rexine wrote two introductions to ancient historiography (on Thucydides and Tacitus ) in the 1970s . A collection of his essays appeared in 1981 under the title The Hellenic Spirit, Byzantine and Post Byzantine . A connoisseur of modern Greek literature, Rexine wrote reviews of contemporary literary works.
