Linos Politis ( Greek Λίνος-Παναγιώτης Νικολάου Πολίτης , born October 4, 1906 in Athens ; † December 21, 1982 ibid) was a Greek neo-Greekist and classical archaeologist .

Life

Linos Politis is the fourth son of the founder of the modern Greek folklore (λαογραφία), Nikolaos Politis (1852-1921). One of his brothers is the famous dramaturge and theater director Fotos Politis (1890–1934).

Linos Politis studied philology at the University of Athens from 1922 to 1926 , especially with Nikos Veis (Νίκος Βέης) and Sokratis Kougeas (Σωκράτης Κουγέας). During this period he was a member of the board of directors and from 1925 to 1926 chairman of the student union (Φοιτητική Συντροφιά). In February 1927 he completed his studies with a diploma (πτυχίο).

By participating in a concours (διαγωνισμός) in May 1929 he got a job as an assistant in the manuscript department of the Greek National Library , which he would hold until he was appointed to the chair of modern Greek philology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1948. The position enabled him to obtain his doctorate in June 1931 with a dissertation supervised by Nikos Veis on Ελληνικά χειρόγραφα της Σερβίδος βασιλίσσης Ελισάβετ ( Greek manuscripts of the Serbian Empress Elisabeth in 1930 in a German version of the Byzantine period ), which only appeared in a German version of the Serbian Empress Elisabeth in 1930.

However, he interrupted this activity twice, first by studying classical archeology and philology abroad for five semesters at the University of Munich (especially with Ernst Buschor ) and one further semester each in Berlin and Paris (1932-1935), then by taking over of the Ephorate in Patras (1943–1945).

At the University of Thessaloniki, whose chair for modern Greek philology after the resignation of its first holder, Giannis Apostolakis (Γιάννης Αποστολάκης, 1880–1974), remained vacant in 1935, Politis taught and researched for 21 years. During this time he was also dean of the Philosophical Faculty twice (1952–1953 and 1961–1962). When the military dictatorship (1967–1974) installed authorized representatives (επίτροποι) at the universities in 1969, the 63-year-old Politis submitted a protest against this measure to the then rector of the university, the Graecist Stylianos G. Kapsomenos (Στυλιανός Γ. 1907–1978), his resignation. Nevertheless, Politis did not leave Thessaloniki and was honored for it by his students, including Panagiotis Moullas and NG Pistos, in the same year with a list of his writings, and ten years later with another commemorative publication.

In 1977 Politis left Thessaloniki for family reasons and settled in Athens . In 1980 he was accepted as a full member of the seat for Modern Greek Philology in the Academy of Athens due to his academic merits ; the official acceptance ceremony took place in 1981. During this time he also worked for the Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ερευνών ( National Research Institute ) and the Μορφωτικό Ίδρυμα Εθνικής Τραπέζης ( Education Foundation of the National Bank ).

From 1952 to 1976 Politis published the journal was Ελληνικά ( Hellenika ), co-founder, board member and long-time Chairman of the 1960 created Ινστιτούτο Νεοελληνικών Σπουδών Μανόλη Τριανταφυλλίδη ( Institute for Modern Greek Studies Manolis Triantafyllidis ) and a member of the Εταιρεία Μακεδονικών Σπουδών ( Society for Macedonian Studies ) and co-founder of the Macedonian Art Society ( Μακεδονική Καλλιτεχνική Εταιρεία ), of which he was chairman for 25 years (1951–1976). Together with Giorgos Seferis , Ioannis Theophanis Kakridis and Manolis Papathomopoulos he founded a series for the publication of philological editions of texts from the early phase of modern Greek literature from the 11th to the 17th centuries, the Βυζαντινή και Νεοελληνική Βιβλιοθήη . Politis has been invited to numerous lectures, seminars and visiting professorships in Italy, Germany, France and the USA.

Although Politis had a strong interest in classical archeology, his professional career made him one of the most important Greek palaeographers and neo-Graecists. As a paleographer, Politis has viewed, described and edited extensive manuscript holdings on countless trips to monasteries, public libraries and private collections. His most important find was the only complete manuscript in the Lexikons des Photios , also known as the libraries . One of his main achievements in the field of modern Greek literature is the first comprehensive account of its history from the Byzantine era to the 20th century. Although abstracts for study programs in Greece had already been published, this literary history was first published in 1973 in an English translation before it became available in Greek five years later. Poltiis is also one of the best editors of the Cretan Renaissance literature, including Erotokritos , and the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos , whose complete works he made available in a philological edition. Other specialties were the Digenis Akritas , the Greek folk song and the writers Andreas Kalvos , Alexandros Papadiamantis and Giorgos Seferis . Given this spectrum, Politis was also an expert on issues relating to the history of the Greek language . On the Greek language question , he took a firm stand on the side of the Dimotiki .
