Panagiotis Moullas

Panagiotis Moullas ( Greek Παναγιώτης Μουλλάς , also in the transcription Panagiōtēs Mullas ; * 1935 in Kilkis ; † September 11, 2010 ) was a Greek literary scholar and neo-Greekist and professor of Byzantine and Neo- Greek studies at the Aristotle University .

After studying Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Thessaloniki, where he was influenced by Linos Politis , Moullas was from 1961 to 1966 a research assistant at the Εθνικόν Ίδρυμα Ερευνών ("National Foundation for Scientific Research") in Athens . In 1966 he fled to Paris , where he first studied French literature and history and from 1970 to 1977 was lecturer in Modern Greek at the University of Paris X-Nanterre and at the Institut néo-hellénique de Paris IV-Sorbonne , of which Konstantinos Thiseos Dimaras was director whom Moullas had already worked together in Athens. In 1976 he obtained the Doctorat d'État with a dissertation on Les concours poétiques de l 'Université d' Athènes, 1851–1877 ("The poetic competitions at the University of Athens , 1851–1877"). In 1977 he was appointed associate professor, and in 1980 full professor of modern Greek philology at the University of Thessaloniki. In 2000 he retired .

Moullas has published, among other things, Greek prose writers ( Alexandros Papadiamantis , Georgios Vizyinos ) and collections of letters ( Photis Politis , Manolis Triantafyllidis ) and translated Lukian , Aeschylos and Gustave Flaubert into modern Greek. His main areas of work were the modern Greek literature of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1993 he was for his book on the modern Greek epistolography entitled Ο λόγος της απουσίας ( "The Word of absence") with the State Prize for essay and literary criticism ( Κρατικό βραβείο δοκιμίου και κριτικής excellent). In 2001 he received the Vassilis Xanthopoulos - Stefanos Pneumatikos Prize for outstanding performance in teaching . His students include Marilisa Mitsou and Miltos Pechlivanos .

From 2011 onwards, the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece (Μορφωτικό Ίδρυμα Εθνικής Τραπέζης) annually awards a prize in memory of Panagiotas Moullas for a post-graduate research paper on modern Greek philology.
