Manolis Triantaphyllidis
Manolis Triantaphyllidis , also Triantafyllidis ( Greek Μανόλης Τριανταφυλλίδης ; * November 15, 1883 in Athens , Greece ; † April 20, 1959 ibid) was an important modern Greek linguist , grammarian , demoticist and educator . He achieved fame above all for his grammar of the modern Greek vernacular (1941), which is still relevant today.
life and work
Triantaphyllidis was a prominent figure in modern Greek intellectual life and science for decades. In 1910 he participated as a founding member of the Liberal Education Association ( Εκπαιδευτικός Όμιλος ) together with Dimitrios Glinos and Alexandros Delmouzos an important role and standing in the language issue on the side of the vernacular . From 1917 to 1920 he was the chief overseer of popular education ( Ανώτερος Επόπτης της δημοτικής εκπαίδευσης ), from 1926 to professor of linguistics and modern Greek grammar at the University of Thessaloniki. In 1941 Triantaphyllidis published - with a foreword by the then ruling fascist Ioannis Metaxas - his famous grammar of the modern Greek vernacular, which was translated into 14 languages and is still used today by linguists as a reliable and competent source. In honor of Triantaphyllidis, the Institute for Modern Greek Studies, the Manolis-Triantaphyllidis Foundation ( Ινστιτούτο Νεοελληνικών Σπουδώλλ, ρ speρυμα Μανόλλη Τριανiste ), was founded in his legacy at the Aristoteles University in the year of his death . His complete works have been published in eight volumes.
