Cariophilis Mitsakis

Kariophilis Mitsakis (also in the transcription Kariophiles Metsakes, Greek Καριοφίλης Μητσάκης , also with the shortened first name Karolos Κάρολος, born May 12, 1932 in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek Byzantinist and Neo-Graecist .

life and work

Mitsakis studied Greek at the Universities of Thessaloniki , Oxford and Munich and then taught from 1966 to 1968 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland . From 1968 to 1972 he succeeded Constantine A. Trypanis on the chair of Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Oxford , but received an appointment as Professor of Neo- Greek Studies at the University of Thessaloniki in 1972 and on in 1977 an identical position at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Athens , where he is now a full professor.

Mitsakis mainly works on Byzantine hymnography ( Romanos Melodos ), on early Greek and late medieval literature ( Alexander Romance ) as well as on poetry and prose of the 20th century ( Odysseas Elytis , Nikos Kazantzakis , Konstantinos Kavafis , Angelos Sikelianos ).
