Marc Lauxtermann

Marc Diederik Lauxtermann (born September 27, 1960 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch Byzantine and Neo-Greekist .

Lauxtermann received his doctorate in 1994 with a dissertation on the Byzantine epigram at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and was professor at the Leerstoelgroep Nieuwgriekse taal- en letterkunde & Byzantinologie there from 2002 to 2006 . Since 2007 he has been the Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Oxford and also a Fellow of Exeter College , Oxford .

Lauxtermann works on Byzantine poetry, especially the epigram , and its metrics (especially the fifteen silver, the so-called "political verse"). Another area of ​​work is modern Greek lexicography : together with Arnold F. van Gemert , he created a two-volume modern Greek-Dutch dictionary. Current research projects concern the earliest Greek grammars, the biography of Johannes Mauropous , the so-called ptochoprodromics and forms of laughter with their socio-political implications in Byzantium .

Lauxtermann is married to Marjolijne C. Janssen .
