Willem F. Bakker

Willem Frederik Bakker , usually abbreviated according to the Dutch Convention Willem F. Bakker or in short Wim Bakker (* 1934 ) is a Dutch Byzantinist and Neo-Grecist and professor emeritus for Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies at the University of Amsterdam .

Bakker studied Classical Philology at the University of Utrecht . In 1966 he received his doctorate there. In 1972 he was appointed as the successor to GH Blanken to hold the chair for Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 1992 Bakker was Visiting Professor at Princeton University , and since 1996 he has been Visiting Scholar and Associate in the Department of Classics at Harvard University . In 1997 a congress on all Cretan literature was held in Amsterdam in honor of Wim Bakker.

The focus of research was initially on historical Greek linguistics , later on edition philology in the field of Byzantine and early modern literature, especially the Cretan Renaissance literature . In addition to dealing with the Erotokritos he put in 25 years of cooperation with Arnold F. van Gemert critical editions of the Cretan Bible drama Η Θυσία του Αβραάμ (German: The sacrifice of Abraham ), the Ιστορία του Βελισαρίου , the legend of the Eastern Roman General Belisario , an anonymously passed lawsuit against the Mother of God and the notary files of Manolis Varouchas kept in the monastery of Amari , as well as three of the five poems by Marinos Phalieros , one of two members of the same name from the Cretan branch of the Venetian Falier family, who also executed the same name 55. Doge Marino Faliero had heard (a complaint about the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus, religious λόγοι διδακτικοίdiscourses ” and a Ρίμα παρηγορητική “consolation poem in rhymes”).
