Hero Hokwerda

Hero Hokwerda (* 1949 in Noordhorn near Groningen ) is a Dutch neo-Greekist and translator.

Hokwerda attended the Willem Lodewijk Gymnasium in Groningen from 1962 to 1968 and studied Classical Languages at the University of Groningen from 1968 to 1977 as a student of Willem J. Aerts ; He chose Middle and Modern Greek Linguistics and Literature as his major, and Classical Greek and the history of Orthodox Christianity as minor subjects . From 1977 to 1979 he completed postgraduate studies at the University of Thessaloniki . From 1979 to 2002 he was a research assistant at the University of Groningen and from 2002 at the University of Amsterdam . In 1991 he was given a dissertation Tussen verleden en toekomst. Nieuwgriekse traditie en ideologie in het werk van Dimítris Chatzís (1913–1981) ( Between the past and the future. Modern Greek tradition and ideology in the work of Dimitris Chatzis (1913–1981) ) did her doctorate in Groningen. Since 2007 he has held the chair for Neo-Greek and Byzantine Studies in Amsterdam. In addition to his academic career, Hokwerda has translated numerous literary works from Greek into Dutch. He retired in 2014.

Hokwerda is primarily concerned with the modern Greek literature of the 19th and 20th centuries and places particular emphasis on dealing with the past and tradition in their various time stages (classical antiquity, Byzantium, Ottoman Empire).
