Gerard Hendrik Blanken

Gerard Henrik Blanken , usually abbreviated to GH Blanken according to the Dutch convention (born June 25, 1902 in Varsseveld , Netherlands ; † October 12, 1986 ) was a Dutch Neo-Greekist and Byzantinist .

Life

After attending grammar school in Arnhem , Blanken studied classical philology at the University of Leiden from 1920 to 1926 , at the Sorbonne from 1926 to 1928 and at the University of Athens from 1928 to 1929 ; in Athens he was also a foreign member of the École française d'Athènes . After a few years in school he was in 1947 in Leiden with a dissertation on the modern Greek dialect of Cargèse ( Greek Καργκέζε) in CorsicaPhD. In the same year he was appointed private lecturer and in 1956 associate professor ( biizonder hoogleraar ) for modern Greek language and literature at the University of Utrecht . In 1954 he received the chair for Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam .

In 1972 one of his students, Willem F. Bakker , was appointed as his successor to the chair in Amsterdam, who, together with two other students from Blanken, Arnold F. van Gemert , later also a professor in Amsterdam, and WJ Aerts , a Graecist who focused on Byzantine studies, carried out numerous projects on Cretan literature of the Renaissance.

Blanken himself mainly dealt with the modern Greek language and the Greek language question and finally translated the modern Greek poet Kavafis , initially in a selection, later in extensive collections at the request of his publisher, and finally in full into Dutch. He was also active in the field of Byzantine studies and founded the publication series Byzantina Neerlandica (EJ Brill, Leiden, 1969ff.) With Herman Jan Scheltema and Herman Hennephof .
