Socratis Kougeas

Sokratis Kougeas , also in the transcription Sokrates Kugeas ( Greek Σωκράτης Κουγέας , born September 14, 1876 in Doloi (Δολοί), Western Mani , Messenia ; † September 27, 1966 ) was a Greek historian and paleographer .

Life

After attending the high school in Kalamata , Kougeas studied from 1894 to 1899 at the philosophical faculty of the University of Athens . Among the teachers there, he was most deeply impressed by Nikolaos Politis and Spyridon Lambros . Later he was to become Lambros' employee. He completed his studies in 1899 with a dissertation De novo Xiphilineo codice Iberitico 812 ("About the new Xiphilinos - Codex Iberiticus 812"). He was then a Greek teacher and school principal from 1901 to 1904, until he was able to continue his studies from 1904 to 1909 with a state scholarship in Germany and France. In Halle he heard Friedrich Blass , Wilhelm Dittenberger , Carl Robert , Ulrich Wilcken and Georg Wissowa , in Munich he was a student of Otto Crusius and Karl Krumbacher and heard Adolf Furtwängler , Iwan von Müller and Robert von Pöhlmann , in Berlin Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , Hermann Diels , Eduard Meyer , Eduard Norden , Adolf von Harnack , in Paris with Daniel Serruy's papyrology. After his return to Greece he taught again in a school from 1910 on. From 1916 to 1918 he was secretary of the General State Archives.

In 1918 he received the full chair of general history at the University of Athens, which he held until his retirement in 1947. From 1931 to 1947 he was also a professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts and from 1943 to 1950 at the Pantion University . From 1923 until his death he was also the honorary director of the manuscript department of the national library . He was also a member of the first committee to select professors for the University of Thessaloniki , founded in 1925 .

Researches

Kougeas was mainly concerned with Greek history and philology, in particular with the history of the Mani and with palaeography and epigraphy . In his second year of study, Spyridon Lambros introduced him to paleography and took him on paleographic research trips to Patmos and Mount Athos as well as abroad. With Hans von Soden he looked for manuscripts of the New Testament in Andros , Athens , on Mount Athos, in Constantinople , in the monastery of Megaspiläon , on Patmos and in Thessaloniki . Together with the Byzantinist Konstantinos Amantos he edited the magazine Elleniká from 1928 to 1939 .

Awards

In 1929 he was appointed a member of the Academy of Athens and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1953 he was elected President of the Academy of Athens. In 1937 the University of Tübingen and in 1958 the University of Thessaloniki awarded him an honorary doctorate.
