Hans Eideneier

Hans Eideneier (born May 21, 1937 in Stuttgart ) is a German Byzantinist , Neo-Graecist and literary translator .

life and work

Eideneier attended the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium Stuttgart and graduated from high school there in 1956, afterwards he studied classical philology and Byzantine studies and received his doctorate in Munich in 1966 with a dissertation on so-called Christian taboo words in Greek (Eideneier refutes the thesis according to which the ancient Greek words ἄρτος , οἶνος, ἰχθύς and ὕδωρ due to their Christian meaning in later Greek by the corresponding words ψωμί (ον), κρασί (ν), (ὀ) ψάρι (ον) and νερό (ν) should have been replaced). In 1974 he completed his habilitation in Cologne with a text-critical edition including a commentary on the satirical poem about the beardless type, the Spanos . He then held a professorship for Central and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Cologne . From 1994 until his retirement in 2002, he was a full professor for Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Hamburg .

Eideneier mainly deals scientifically with the beginnings of vernacular modern Greek literature in Byzantine and post-Byzantine times and is editor of the series of publications and organizer of the Neograeca Medii Aevi congress series . Romiosini Verlag , which was founded in 1982 and in which this series and many of his other publications have appeared, was run by his wife Niki Eideneier-Anastassiadi . With her he also wrote a widely used textbook for the modern Greek language . Eideneier was also chairman of the Πολιτιστική Ομάδα Πρωτοβουλίας - Initiative Group Greek Culture in the Federal Republic of Germany from 1983 to 2008. V.

Awards

For his services to Byzantine and modern Greek literature and culture, Eideneier was honored with an honorary doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Medal of Honor from the Foundation for Greek Culture, Berlin, in 2005 . In 2017 he received an honorary doctorate from the Democritus University of Thrace .
