Peter Schreiner (Byzantinist)

Peter Schreiner (born May 4, 1940 in Munich ) is a German Byzantinist .

After attending the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich up to the Abitur in 1961, Schreiner studied Byzantine Studies , Middle Latin Philology , Ancient History and Classical Philology at the University of Munich . On February 23, 1967 he received his doctorate with Hans-Georg Beck with a thesis on the Byzantine small chronicles. In 1969 he became an employee of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana . In 1974, Schreiner became a private lecturer at the Free University of Berlin . From 1979 to 2005 he was full professor for Byzantine Studies at the University of Cologne .

From 1991 to 2004 Peter Schreiner was the editor of the Byzantine magazine . From 2001 to 2011 he was President of the Association Internationale des Études Byzantines . Since 1991 he has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and since 1993 of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen as well as an honorary doctorate from the universities of Tarnovo (1992), Belgrade (2003) and Sofia (2004). From 2005 to 2009 he was chairman of the scientific advisory board of the German Study Center in Venice .
