Silvia Ronchey
Silvia Ronchey (born March 13, 1958 in Rome ) is an Italian historian and Byzantinist .
Life
Silvia Ronchey is the daughter of the journalist and former Italian Minister of Culture ( Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali ) Alberto Ronchey .
She studied Byzantine Studies at the University of Pisa and graduated in 1981 with the laurea . This was followed by study and research stays at the University of Athens and at the Collège de France with Gilbert Dagron . In 1986 she was a Fulbright Fellow at the Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies (again in 1990). This is where she worked closely with Alexander Kazhdan . After her return from the USA, she completed a Dottorato di ricerca from 1986 to 1989 at the University of Florence . She has been teaching Byzantine history at the University of San Marino since 1991 , and since 2005 she has been a professor at the University of Siena . There she initially worked on a postdoctoral fellowship and then as a ricercatrice . Since 2012 she has been teaching at the University of Rome III , since 2016 as a full professor for Civiltà Bizantina .
Even during his studies, Ronchey researched the old manuscripts of the Greek Orthodox St. John's Monastery on the island of Patmos . She gained fame beyond the field through her translations of parts of the Vita of Barlaam and Josaphat and the Chronographia of Michael Psellos into Italian. She also made a name for herself as the editor of anthologies on Byzantine history, including the four volumes on Byzantine culture by Peter Schreiner . In addition to Eustathios of Thessalonike , problems of hagiography and historiography as well as the last decades of Byzantium are among her research topics.
Silvia Ronchey has been writing articles for the Italian newspaper La Stampa since 1986 and moderating radio and television programs on cultural topics for the RAI .
