James Hillman

James Hillman (born April 12, 1926 in Atlantic City , New Jersey , † October 27, 2011 in Thompson , Connecticut ) was an American psychologist and author of numerous books on topics of depth psychology .

Life

Hillman came to Frankfurt am Main in 1946 as a member of the United States Army , where he was employed as a news editor in the service of the US occupation forces . He then studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Trinity College Dublin until he moved to India for a year .

From 1953 he continued his studies at the University of Zurich , where he received his doctorate in 1959 . At the same time he completed his psychoanalytic training at the CG Jung Institute, where he then worked as the first director of studies until 1969. From 1966 he was also a speaker at the annual Eranos conference. In 1970 he became editor of Spring Publications , a series of publications on analytical psychology , and the journal Spring .

In 1978 Hillman moved back to the USA: in 1980 he founded the Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture in Dallas . He lived in Connecticut as a freelance writer.
