Eranos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eranos (Greek ἔρανος ) referred to an association in ancient Greece that makes contributions to a specific purpose, e.g. B. for ransom from captivity or slavery, payment of a fine or for a common feast. Eranos was also the name of the property collected and the purpose of the collection (e.g. payment).

In the Odyssey, Homer used ἔρανος to denote a simple, ordinary meal with regular participants who made their contribution (Od. 1, 226).

The έρανος in today's Greek means a specific donation collection or fundraising campaign .

Eranos Association

In the classical Athenian democracy , the Eranos Association provided from the 6th century BC. Chr. Represents an independent legal person. The association had the function of a credit association and was set up according to the statutes for the supply of needy people. Economic historians therefore see it as a prototype of the insurance industry. The Eranos Association comprised provisions of personal, procedural and property law. In addition, he had active and passive procedural law, i.e. that is, he could sue and be sued.

Eranos meetings

The Eranos conferences live from the gifts brought by their conference guests. These gifts are scientific contributions from very different subject areas on a predetermined topic. The conferences have been held in Ascona (Switzerland) on Monte Verità and on the shores of Lake Maggiore since 1933 . The Eranos conferences were initiated by Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn as a meeting place for Eastern and Western religion and spirituality. In the following years they became famous for the diversity of their contributions and their humanistic themes. Scientists from different disciplines live and eat together for ten days, which creates a conducive atmosphere for productive discussion of the speeches given.

Eranos yearbooks

Based on the conferences, the Eranos yearbooks have been published since 1933 with contributions in German, English and Italian, edited by Daniel Brody . The title of the first volume was Yoga and Meditation in the East and in the West . CG Jung was a regular participant until 1961, who, like many other speakers, significantly developed or further developed his theories at the Eranos conferences through discourse (e.g. with Karl Kerényi and Mircea Eliade ). It was here that Jung met Paul Mellon's wife , who persuaded her husband to make donations to spread Jung's ideas in the United States. This circle also included Erich Neumann , Gershom Scholem , Adolf Portmann , Herbert Read , and Joseph Campbell . The latter took care of the distribution of articles from the Eranos yearbooks in the USA from 1954. Important speakers (also from more recent times) were Erich Neumann , Heinrich Zimmer , Gustav Richard Heyer , Karl Löwith , Henry Corbin , Eric Voegelin , Jean Gebser , Annemarie Schimmel , Jan Assmann , Erwin Schrödinger , David Carrasco, Moshe Idel , Ilya Prigogine , George Steiner , Walter Haug , Harald Szeemann , Shizuteru Ueda , Tilo Schabert, Reinhold Merkelbach .
