Hans Thomas Hakl (also HT Hakl , HT Hansen or HTH ; born February 27, 1947 in Graz , Austria ) is an Austrian author, translator, editor, editor. Under the pseudonym HT Hansen , he has become known in the German-speaking world as a translator and specialist in the esoteric work of the Italian cultural philosopher Julius Evola . His book The Hidden Spirit of Eranos is considered a standard work on the Eranos conferences that have been taking place since 1933 . Hakl is the founder of the Octagon Library, which is one of the largest European private libraries for religious studies and esotericism.

Life

Hakl was born in Graz in 1947 and obtained his doctorate in 1970. iuris. From 1973 he lived first in Italy and then in Switzerland. He built up an international trading group with a focus on the Far East. From 1978 to 1995 he was involved in the esoteric Ansata Verlag , Interlaken. In 1990 he left international trade and returned to Austria. In 1996 he founded the magazine Gnostika , today the most important German-language publication organ for the history of esotericism, and was its editor until July 2009. Since then part of the editorial team. He wrote numerous introductions to esoteric works.

Research priorities

Already at a very young age I came into contact with Far Eastern and Jungian ideas. Through his interest in magic, Hakl also came into contact with Adolf Hemberger . Since meeting Julius Evola in Rome in the early 1970s, HT Hakl began to deal intensively with the books of the controversial artist, cultural and religious philosopher, esotericist and scholar. Under the pseudonym HT Hansen, he translated Evola's books from Italian into German. Including the esoteric works Ur I and Ur II and The Hermetic Tradition, which have appeared in several editions . The use of this pseudonym also led to misunderstandings and accusations that Evolas was "defender and propagandist"; Hakl sees himself “on the other hand as one of the very few who are looking for a middle ground between undifferentiated demonization and exalted admiration for this man”, and has not used the pseudonym since 2000.

His book The Hidden Spirit of Eranos documents the history of the Eranos conferences, a meeting place between East and West that aims to mediate between science and esotericism and which had a significant influence on the intellectual history of the 20th century. Personalities such as CG Jung , Gershom Scholem , Mircea Eliade , Adolf Portmann , Karl Kerényi , Heinrich Zimmer , Henry Corbin , Annemarie Schimmel , and DT Suzuki met there over the years for lectures and discussions. The book documents an alternative intellectual history of the 20th century.

Over the years Hakl wrote essays or forewords for the new editions of the following people: Nikolaus Flamel , Papus , Karlfried Graf Dürckheim , Hans Freimark , Dr. Franz Sättler - (Musallam), Éliphas Lévi , René Guénon , George Robert Stow Mead , Aleister Crowley , Bal Gangadhar Tilak .

Hakl has worked on esoteric and scientific journals in several countries as well as on relevant international dictionaries.

Appreciation

Hakl's literary work is difficult to classify. His essays, articles and texts are characterized by a thorough examination of the subject and the incorporation of various foreign-language and quite controversial sources. With an intention aimed at completeness and a balanced, scientifically historical perspective, he also tackles topics that are neither free of prejudice nor neutral. His own texts have been translated into English, French, Italian, Hungarian, Czech and Russian.
