Ulrich Moennig

Ulrich Moennig (born November 3, 1961 in Wesel ) is a German Byzantinist and Neo-Graecist .

Ulrich Moennig passed his Abitur in 1981 at the Stiftsgymnasium Xanten and then studied Classical Philology , Neo-Greek and Byzantine Studies at the University of Cologne , primarily with Hans Eideneier , Peter Schreiner , Peter Wülfing-von Martitz and Clemens Zintzen . In 1984 and 1985 he was a guest student at the University of Crete . In 1992, 1994 and 2002 he returned there as a visiting professor. After receiving his Magister Artium in 1987 (on the tradition of the Middle and Modern Greek Alexander Romance) , he spent two years studying in Athens , where he was supervised by Nikolaos Panajotakis and Alexis Politis.

From 1989 to 1991 he was a lecturer in Modern Greek at the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Mainz in Germersheim . In 1991 he was awarded a doctorate in Cologne with his dissertation The Late Byzantine Review of the Alexander Romance. phil. doctorate and was a research assistant at Hans Eideneier until 1993. With him he was in charge of the "Neograeca in Germania" project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). From 1994 to 1995 he was a DFG habilitation fellow. In 1995 he followed Eideneier as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg (until 2001). In 2002 he completed his habilitation with a critical edition of the Alexander novel under the title The Story of Alexander and Semiramis . After a two-year guest stay at the International University of Cyprus in Nicosia , he was appointed full professor for Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Hamburg in 2004.

Moennig focuses his courses on Byzantine and modern Greek literature. His main research interests are narrativity in Byzantine literature, the emergence of new genres in the transition from Byzantine to modern Greek literature (from the 14th to the 16th century) and Greek studies in the early modern German area.
