Gabriel "Gabe" Kaplan (born March 31, 1945 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ) is a former professional American poker player , actor and television presenter . Kaplan starred in the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter in the 1970s . He was a commentator on GSN's High Stakes Poker through Season 6 .
Life
Acting
In his youth, Kaplan wanted to be a baseball player . However, he did not make the jump to one of the higher leagues and decided to turn to other interests. Kaplan began working in a New Jersey hotel . It was there that he first came into contact with some comedians, whereupon he decided to devote himself to stand-up comedy . Kaplan was so successful in this area that he made five appearances on the Tonight Show in 18 months . Subsequently, his first music album appeared with the name Holes and Mello-Rolls and in 1977 with the single Up Your Nose, a placement in the US single charts . From 1975 to 1979 Kaplan starred in the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter . In the following years he starred in several films.

Kaplan first played at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas in 1978 . He recorded his biggest success in July 2004, when he at an event of the Poker Tour World in the Mirage was in Las Vegas Third and more than 250,000 US dollars won. He also finished runner- up in a 2005 WSOP tournament for over $ 200,000. In 2007 he took part in the television tournament Poker After Dark , where he eliminated Howard Lederer and Annie Duke , among others , to beat Kristy Gazes in heads-up .
