Stamatis Karatzas

Stamatis Karatzas ( Greek Σταμάτης Κωνσταντίνου Καρατζάς ; born March 2, 1913 in Kato Kourouni near Kymi (Greece) ; † May 16, 1986 in Athens ) was a Greek neo-Greekist .

Life

Stamatis Konstantinu Karatzas grew up in the village of Kato Kourouni ( Greek Κάτω Κουρούνι ) near Kymi on the island of Evia and studied from 1931 to 1936 classical philology and literary studies at the University of Athens . During the Second World War he fought in the Albanian resistance and in the Greek National Liberation Front ( Greek Εθνικό Απελευθερωτικό Μέτωπο ) as a partisan against the German occupiers .

After the end of the war, Karatzas obtained his doctorate in 1945 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Athens with a dissertation on the hypocoristics in the dialect of Kimi and the surrounding area and deepened his studies in Paris . In 1952 he left Greece and went to the University of Hamburg as a lecturer for Byzantine and modern Greek philology . In 1956 he was appointed university lecturer and in 1959 an adjunct professor. From 1960 he was visiting professor at the University of Aix-en-Provence . In 1964 Karatzas returned to Greece and taught as a lecturer at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and at the University of Ioannina . In 1967 he was removed from office by the Greek military regime and emigrated to France, where he received a position at the University of Aix-en-Provence. After the end of the Greek military dictatorship in 1974, he returned to Greece. He worked in Athens on the literary and historical archive "ΕΛΙΑ" ( Greek Ελληνικό Λογοτεχνικό και Ιστορικό Αρχείο , "Greek literature and history archive "). There you can also find his scientific papers, which in particular contain his correspondence with scientists from Greece, Germany, France and Italy.

Karatzas' main research interests were modern Greek literature and linguistics, in particular the question of the ancient or post-ancient origins of the Greek dialects of Griko, Lower Italy and Tsakonian .
