Johannes Sykutris (actually Greek Ιωάννης Συκουτρής Ioannis Sykoutris , born December 1, 1901 in Smyrna ; † September 21, 1937 in Corinth ) was a Greek classical philologist .

Life

Sykutris was born in Smyrna when the city was still predominantly Greek . He attended the local evangelical school ( Εὐαγγελικὴ σχολή ) and was able to start studying at the University of Athens in 1919 thanks to his above-average performance with the support of the Archepiscopate of Smyrna . After the conquest of Smyrna by Mustafa Kemal Pasha in the Greco-Turkish War , Sykutris interrupted his studies and went to Cyprus as an assistant teacher. After the war ended, he completed his studies in Athens from 1924 to 1925 and went on a multi-year trip to Germany, where he deepened his studies: first a year in Leipzig , then three years in Berlin , the last year supported by an Alexander scholarship -von-Humboldt Foundation. In Berlin he came into contact with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , Wilhelm Schubart and Paul Maas .

After his return to Greece, Sykutris taught at the Arsakeion in Athens for a year and worked as a librarian at the Academy of Athens before the university appointed him a lecturer. He was unable to accept a call from the German University of Prague (1933). In the years that followed, he received much criticism for his publications on the Platonic Symposium and ancient Greek pederasty . In 1937 he committed suicide in Corinth before the semester began.

In Greece Sykutris is particularly known as a translator of the poetics of Aristotle and the symposium of Plato . In Germany, its importance is based on numerous publications from the late 20s and early 30s. He dealt with the annotation and emendation of ancient letter literature; especially his research on the age and authorship of the Socratic letters were groundbreaking.

The Academy of Athens named the Ioannis Sykoutris Library after him.
