Leone Allacci

Leone Allacci , also Leo (n) Allatius , Leo (n) Allatios , Leon Allatiusios (around 1586 - January 19, 1669 ) was a Catholic convert , Greek classical philologist, librarian and theologian .

Life

Allacci was born in an Orthodox neighborhood on the Greek island of Chios around 1586 . He lived first in Calabria, later in Rome , where he first taught Greek and later as a favorite of Pope Gregory XV. made a career at the Greek College of Saint Athanasius .

After the conquest of Heidelberg in 1622 by Tilly , the victorious Bavarian Elector Maximilian transferred the precious Heidelberg Bibliotheca Palatina , which he wanted to take with him to Munich, at the express request of Pope Gregory XV. the Vatican. Pope Gregory entrusted Allacci with the transport of the manuscripts with a caravan of 200 mules across the Alps to Rome . On that occasion, Allacci also sold twelve boxes of valuable books for himself.

After the death of Gregory XV. In 1623 Allacci became librarian to Cardinal Francesco Barberini and in 1661 he was promoted to librarian of the Vaticana , in which office he died in 1669.
