Hans-Christian Günther

Hans-Christian Günther (born April 28, 1957 in Müllheim ) is a German classical philologist .

After graduating from high school, Günther studied musicology with Wolfgang Fernow (he continues to play the piano). He then went on to study philosophy , linguistics and classical philology at the Universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Oxford . He received his doctorate in 1985 in Freiburg with an edition of the Euripides tragedy Iphigenie in Aulis , and from 1986 worked there as an academic councilor. His habilitation followed in 1991 , also in Freiburg. Then he was a private lecturer in Freiburg; In 1999 he was appointed adjunct professor.

Günther deals with ancient philosophy, Greek tragedy, Augustan poetry, text criticism , Byzantine philology and the translation of modern Greek poetry (including Giorgios Seferis and Dionysios Solomos ). He is head of a research project on Georgian literature funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and editor of the series "Texts and Studies on the Greek-Oriental Cultural Area".
