Peter Mackridge

Peter Mackridge , Greek Πήτερ Μάκριτζ (* 1946 ) is a British neo- Greekist .

Life

Mack Ridge studied modern Greek and French language and literature at St John's College of Oxford University . With a scholarship from Queen's College , Oxford , he stayed in Athens from 1969 to 1972 to prepare his unpublished dissertation on the Greek detective novel of the interwar period. From 1973 to 1980 he was a lecturer in modern Greek philology at King's College London . Since 1981 he has been a Fellow of St Cross College and Lecturer in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at Oxford University. In 1996 he was appointed professor. In 2003 he retired early and has been Professor Emeritus of Modern Greek ever since . During his retirement he was also visiting professor at King's College London. In 2008 he was appointed Doctor honoris causa by the University of Athens .

Mackridge is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies and the Greek journal Kondyloforos .

Focus of work

Mackridge works linguistically on history, diglossia and the dialects of Modern Greek as well as literary studies, in particular on Solomos , Kavafis , Politis , Prevelakis , Seferis and Tachtsis, as well as cultural history on the Greek language question and the associated ideologies and Greek nationalism.

Together with David Holton and Irene Philippaki-Warburton , he wrote a modern Greek grammar that has become a standard work in both long and short versions.

Mackridge also works as a translator from Modern Greek into English ( Prevelakis , Alexandrou , Patrikios , Tachtsis , Ioannou , Seferis ).
