Life

Hess was the son of the engraver Carl Ernst Christoph Hess , from whom he also received his first artistic lessons. From 1800 Hess created his first engravings ; mostly he preferred depictions of animals here .

At the age of 14, Hess was admitted to the Munich Art Academy in 1806 . He was able to do his military service in the general staff of Prince Carl Philipp von Wrede . He accompanied this during the wars from 1813 to 1815 and also to the Congress of Vienna . During this time, Hess created a large number of sketches, which then formed the basis for his oil paintings .

Later on, Hess repeatedly went on study trips through Switzerland , Italy and Austria . In his early work the pictures were kept rather small; the first large-format picture by Peter Hess was the depiction of the battle of Arcis sur Aube in May 1814.

In 1833 he accompanied King Otto I to Greece and held there a. a. its entry into Nauplia . In 1835 a painting in oil with many portraits was made over it ; 1839 a second showing Otto's reception in Athens (both today in Munich, Neue Pinakothek ). In 1839, Hess accepted Tsar Nicholas I's invitation to Saint Petersburg and Moscow and portrayed the main events of 1812 in eight large battle pictures. In the arcades of the Munich court garden , he and his assistant Nilson executed 39 frescoes from the history of the Greek independence movement.

In 1861 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . Associated with this was the elevation to the personal Bavarian nobility. He also received the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael in 1838 and the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art in 1853 . He was also honored with foreign medals, for example as an officer of the Belgian Leopold Order and with the Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd class.

Hess died at the age of 78 on April 4, 1871 in Munich. The grave of Hess is in the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich (Gräberfeld 13 - Row 1 - Place 50/51). Location
