Vasilis Tsitsanis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vasilis Tsitsanis ( Greek Βασίλης Τσιτσάνης also Vassilis Tsitsanis * 18th January 1915 in Trikala , Greece ; † 18th January 1984 in London , Great Britain ) was a Greek composer , bouzouki - virtuoso and singer .

Tsitsanis is regarded as one of the most important representatives of rembetiko and is treated as the composer who developed this music very strongly. He has recorded more than 600 songs on records. For the vast majority of his pieces he plays bouzouki himself and sings second or third voice. However, he was also in demand with other composers as a bouzouki player and interpreter, so that he participated in numerous records of his "rivals". Many of his songs are still very popular today, such as B. Synefiasmeni Kyriaki ( Greek Συννεφιασμένη Κυριακή / Trüber Sonntag), which was composed during the occupation of Greece by the Germans. Although the lyrics of the song contain no political allusions, it was repeatedly interpreted politically. It is one of those songs that many Greeks know by heart.
