He completed his high school studies in Sopron in 1885 and wanted to study theology in Pressburg , but then chose the medical faculty at Charles University in Prague and stayed there until 1893.

Due to insufficient labor supply in Slovakia, he moved to Selca on the island of Brač in Dalmatia , where he became a community doctor in 1894. After spending a year in Santiago de Chile , he moved to Punta Arenas in Patagonia and lived there in a community of Croatian emigrants. Only after the establishment of Czechoslovakia did Kukučín return to Europe and after a short stay in Paris he came to Czechoslovakia in autumn 1922. In the years 1923–1925 he moved between Martin and Croatian thermal baths. At the end of 1925 he traveled again to Chile to settle property matters and returned in the spring of 1926. Because of his mental illness, he settled in the Croatian thermal bath Lipik .

He died of pneumonia on May 21, 1928 in Pakrac hospital . He was first buried in the Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb before his remains were moved to the Martin National Cemetery in October 1928 .
