Paul von Leutschau (Slovak Majster Pavol z Levoče , Hungarian Lőcsei Pál mester , * 1460? –1470 ?; † 1537? –1542?) Was a medieval wood artist and sculptor of the 15th and 16th centuries, whose main works were in Leutschau (then Kingdom Hungary , today Levoča in Eastern Slovakia ). The most important is its main altar from 1507 in the Leutschauer Jakobskirche .

This altar made of linden wood is 19 meters high and has been preserved in its entirety, including the cracks .

Three other altars in the Jacob's Church are also attributed to him: the altars of St. Nicholas, the birth of Christ and that of the "four Johns". The main altar in Georgenberg is hardly less known .

Paul's date of birth and death, his place of birth and death and his surname are unknown because most of the documents about Paul von Leutschau were destroyed by fire in 1550. He probably worked in Krakow , Zeben , Neusohl and settled in Leutschau around 1500. There he founded a workshop in 1506 in today's house no.

It is assumed that he learned from Veit Stoss or his environment. Artistic to establish a closeness to Tilman Riemenschneider .

Some dates can be read in the Leutschauer epitaph of the stonemason Martin Urbanowitz: Master Paul was a member of the city council, his wife was called Margaretha, the granddaughter of a carver Paul, from whom the main altar of this church comes. He had three daughters and one son

Today his work in Levoča is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .
