The Porta San Francesco is a historic city gate and former watchtower in the city of San Marino .

history

The Gate of St. Francis (Italian: also known as Porta del Lucho or Porta del Loco ) was built during the Crusades in the 13th century as a protection against the Malatesta army , redesigned in 1451 and restored and expanded in 1581. The original archway was enlarged and raised during the restoration of the crenellated tower and the tower was provided with machicolation .

The former drawbridge that bridged the ditch in front of the city wall is no longer available today. The guards' niches and the machicolations are still there. The upstream ditch was later filled in and is now a paved square in front of the fortified tower and forms the entrance to the 55  hectare historic old town.

On the sides of the gateway is the coat of arms of San Marino and the coat of arms of the Feltresca family from 1366. Next to the vault is an inscription from the 17th century, carved in stone, to prevent visitors from harsh penalties for importing weapons warns.
